Javed Akhtar: All works of fiction in the world are autobiographical – Times of India

For someone who has been in the industry for over five decades, veteran writer Javed Akhtar has seen the evolution of Indian cinema first hand. In a recent interaction at a film festival, Akhtar spoke about how all works of fiction are autobiographical on some level for a writer.

Credited with the hit Zanjeer, along with Salim Khan, Akhtar shared that the ‘Angry Young Man’ tag that got associated with Amitabh Bachchan after the film wasn’t a deliberate attempt on their part as writers. “Today, there is research work done on ‘Zanjeer’s story and its socio-political relevance. Par jab humne story likhi thi, we had never thought about all this. Humko kahaani achchi lagi, humne likh di,” he shared. He also added that any writer should work this way only. “A writer shouldn’t try to consciously write or mould a story depending on what’s happening around them at that particular time. It should rather be something that comes from within their heart. A writer should write as part of society, not as an observer sitting on a pedestal and dishing out sermons. All works of fiction in the world are autobiographical to some extent because the writer draws from personal experiences to create a story that resonates with others too.”
