An update on Tottenham’s hunt for a centre-back has been provided on Monday.
Tottenham are, of course, in the market for fresh legs at centre-back this summer. This comes with Antonio Conte deploying a three-at-the-back system, something Spurs did not have that much experience with before 2021/22.
As a result, their squad is not really set up to utilise such a system, especially on the left side of a back-three where left-back Ben Davies is the club’s only real option.
So, it was not too surprising to see it reported over a month ago that the Lilywhites are in the market for a centre-back or two this summer.
Ideally, Conte is keen to wrap up Spurs’ summer business before the July 9 trip to South Korea, although there is an understanding that it will be difficult to do so.
The likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Pau Torres were linked with Spurs over the last six weeks or so, though there appears to be little movement on those fronts.
Now, Tottenham look to have turned their attention towards another centre-back.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo report that Tottenham have made an offer to take Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet on loan. Spurs have included an option to buy the defender but face competition from Roma, who have made a permanent transfer offer.
Said transfer could be completed soon as it is believed Barcelona are keen to ship Lenglet out this week.
On a less positive note, Tottenham’s move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol appears unlikely to succeed.
According to Croatian outlet Jutarnji, there is very little chance of the defender being sold this summer with Leipzig planning to give him a new contract with a release clause which will not be active until 12 months’ time.
